Debra Cowan’s sixth recording is her second collaboration with drummer Dave Mattacks (Fairport Convention, Richard Thompson, Rosanne Cash) fulfilling the role as arranger and producer. This EP contains six songs about change, loss, transformation, tragedy, and empowerment. From the Celtic-sounding traditional “Hills of Greenmore”, to the late Lal Waterson’s “Anna Dixie”, Greening the Dark brings the listener on a journey of compelling storytelling through Cowan’s expressive voice and Mattack’s exquisite arrangements.
Ballads Long & Short is the newest recording from John Roberts and Debra Cowan who have been described as “two of the finest voices in folk music”. Born out of a performing collaboration of several years, this recording reflects the love and respect that both of these musicians have for songs that have stood the test of time. Ballads Long & Short contains 14 songs; eleven are traditional, a composed song each from John Conolly and Chris Sugden, both prominent English songwriters and one from Australian John Warner.
“Among Friends” is a live recording of a performance Debra gave at the Bacca Pipes Folk Club, Keighley, W.Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. Recorded live by Mike Hockenhull, this CD consists of 11 songs, some with Debra singing unaccompanied and some with her own guitar accompaniment. The Bacca Pipes attendees that evening did not disappoint in lending their voices on many of the songs with choruses; they sang in a classical opera style for “Good Fish Chowder” and they also got in touch with their inner pirates on “Dreadnaught Mutiny”, even though there are no pirates anywhere in the song. “Among Friends” presents a lovely snapshot of a moment in time one November evening when Debra Cowan sang many of her favorite songs in one of the most respected folk clubs in the UK.
Released in 2009, this recording was arranged and produced by Dave Mattacks, best known for his work with the English folk-rock band Fairport Convention. Built on a theme of transformation through devastation, this collection includes contemporary songs written by such luminaries as Richard Thompson, Bill Caddick, Nic Jones, Steve Tilston, and Ralph Stanley. Ray Davies’ “Alcohol” has become a favorite among listeners as has Chris Moore’s “Wall of Stone”. Also included are traditional songs that reflect Debra’s extensive research of North American and British Isles ballad collections.
Co-produced with composer and guitarist Michael DeLalla, Debra breathes new life into eleven traditional songs from the Helen Hartness Flanders Song Collection. In an elegant dance with Michael’s exquisite guitar settings, Debra continues the tradition of a performance that is always delivered with reverence and respect for the song.
Debra’s first solo recording, released in 2001 continues to earn praise from listeners world-wide. Debra Cowan’s vocals have already made their mark on the folk music scene in North America and abroad. The Long Grey Line demonstrates her sensitivity to, and knowledge of, the traditions that are the source of her music. While many of the pieces are traditional, three songs by contemporary writers fit beautifully into this stunning collection.
