Snow, Snow, Snow, Snow, etc

Snow.Feb15.2015

Backyard

I am ready for this winter to be over as I know that many in the Northeastern US are feeling the same. It is to the point where I don’t even want to leave the house, even when the sun is shining. It’s cold or as they say here “wicked cold!” with high temps in the teens and wind chills that make one’s teeth chatter just reading the numbers.  And then there is snow.

This is what my yard looked like on the morning of February 15, 2015. It’s the first time I have seen snow all the way up to the middle rail of our cedar post fence. You all have been reading about it I am sure.

I spent 8 years of my life in Illinois. Four of those years were in the Chicago area and four were in Central Illinois. Even in the winter of ’77-’78 with lots of snow and cold there, I have never seen this much snow. My Native Californian consciousness has made peace with the New England winter, or so I thought. I think that with Winter 2015, they might begin to wage a war that I thought ended about 13 years ago.

Here are two pics of our driveway. The pic on the left is about 8 feet high and the one on the right is about 11 feet high. This is where the snow goes in the first storm of the winter.

But as you might imagine as the snow continues to fall, these piles get so high that we cannot throw any more snow up there so we have to find another place to put it.

In this we are pretty lucky:  Our neighbor across the street has a wide expanse of lawn between her property (which you cannot see in the photo) and the white house pictured. After we get about two feet, we start walking the snow across the way and deposit it there. The large pile in front of the yellow sign is a combination of the plow and us piling on the extra snow.

Here is a view looking out our second story window around the corner from the previous photo. The hump is my neighbor’s car. I guess he decided that it would be too much work to dig it out. See you in June, Nate’s Car!

But Sunset.2_15I did get a nice sunset last week.
