December 2013-Happy Holidays!

Christmas_2010

This photograph was taken by my late brother, Michael Strassman who would have turned 54 on December 29th of this year. He was a video producer by profession, but was also widely recognised by the climbing community for his first ascents on various routes, specifically in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. I am not sure which bit of the Sierra is depicted here, but this was Michael’s favorite place to be. You can find out more about him by clicking on his name.

A Couple of Holiday Music Favorites

My good friend and occasional music and touring partner, John Roberts is one-fourth of Nowell Sing We Clear (NSWC), a quartet specialising in Christmas and seasonal music from Great Britain and North America.  The show is always performed during the month of December and due to logistics, the concerts happen mostly in the Northeastern USA. They have been performing this wonderful pageant of songs, stories and a Kentucky Mummer’s play for 38 years and it’s never the same show; NSWC is always adding new songs or bringing out gems from past years. If you are looking for some different seasonal music for this time of year, check them out at the Nowell Sing We Clear website . Watch a video from 2008 of NWSC singing “I Heard From Heaven Today”

A Blast From The Past-Tar’d & Feather’d

As many of you know, I was in a group from 1988-1993 called Tar’d & Feather’d. This group consisted of Dave Longaker, Jim Williams, David Cowan (my ex-husband) and myself. The song below is from one of our concerts and is a version of “Lazarus and Divers”. Ironically, I think this version came from Nowell Sing We Clear, but I am not sure. A bit of context: David Cowan was introducing the song and was trying to strap on his accordion. Both Jim and Dave played that particular accordion and Jim being of a much smaller physical build than Dave, had adjusted the straps to fit him. As you can hear in this recording, David Cowan is having a bit of a struggle with this particular instrument. David Longaker and I are on vocals, David Cowan on accordion, David Longaker on anglo concertina and yours truly on penny whistle. Click on the image below to listen to the song. Enjoy!

A song for you
